Doing some research, I found that one in every five women have so history of UTI’s otherwise known as urinary tract infections. 1. Oysters. Myth has it that oysters are the food of love, an aphrodisiac you might say. Science may just agree. Just two to three oysters deliver a full day’s supply of zinc, a mineral critical for normal functioning of the male reproductive system. Scientists are divided over reports that sperm counts have declined over the last 50 years and that environmental factors are to blame. Getting adequate zinc is sometimes the answer. In one trial, 22 men with low testosterone levels and sperm counts were given zinc every day for 45 to 50 days. Testosterone levels and sperm counts rose.

I am thinking that my husband will likely take a Zinc pill over eating an    Oyster.  Either way it’s never been so easy to get my husband to eat something that might be good for him.

2. Broccoli. This lucky mom has two growing girls that love Broccoli. Who knew that forcing my children to eat their green veggies could save their lives? A recent Harvard study finds that cruciferous vegetables, like broccoli, may protect against bladder cancer. It’s one of the most common cancers in the US and affects two to three times as many men as women. Broccoli and cabbage lead the pack of the most protective foods.

3. Peanut Butter. The jiffy commercials were right, eating peanut butter does make your heart beat a little stronger.  If you want a healthy heart, spread your morning toast with peanut butter. Heart disease is the leading killer of men and women, but men fall victim at an earlier age.  “Peanut butter is a little higher in fat,” says Penny Kris-Etherton, Ph.D., the lead author of the Penn State study. “But it’s the type that’s good for you — monounsaturated fat.” Researchers have predicted that the peanut diet could reduce heart-disease risk even more than could the AHA diet. Just don’t go nutty plastering on the tasty spread, since it is high in calories.

4. Flaxseed. Years ago a nutritionist encouraged me to take flaxseed as a part of my daily regimen to help with joint pains and aches.  Who knew that Flaxseed the ingredient that bakers use for that nutty-flavor could be so good for you? It doesn’t look very appetizing but scientists say the tiny reddish-brown seed, rich in estrogen like compounds called lignans, are a potential weapon against breast cancer. An exciting report at last year’s San Antonio Breast Cancer Symposium showed that adding flaxseed to the diet of women with breast cancer effectively slowed tumor growth. You can flavor your muffins with flaxseed, but the easiest way to get the beneficial lignans is to sprinkle a few tablespoons of ground flaxseed on your morning cereal. Look for the seeds in health food stores or in supermarkets on the flour aisle. They’re easy to grind in a blender or coffee grinder. But get seeds — there are no lignans in the oil.

5. Buffalo Meat. That’s right Meat and more Meat, who knew.  Due largely to menstruation, women tend to be anemic more than men. Low iron levels in blood can cause severe fatigue and fatigue doesn’t work well for busy moms like you and I. To get a good dose of iron, try bison. Buffalo meat is lean and has what diet-conscious women understand, Buffalo Meat has lots of iron and less fat than most cuts of beef. Buffalo meat can help boost energy and lower weight. And you don’t have to have a home on the range to get some bison anymore. You can pick it up at many supermarkets across the United States, or look for a local bison ranch in your area. You’d be surprised how many there are.

Halloween Parties Made Easy

Halloween Parties Made Easy Traditional Trick or Treating door to door is only one way to enjoy Halloween.  How about a Spooktacular neighborhood Halloween party?  

This fun choice for Halloween can be a safe way to enjoy Halloween by inviting the kids in your neighborhood over to making some fun Halloween treats and enjoy a night in with friends.
Here are a few recipes to get you started.     

 Frightful Fingers

This fun finger food is the perfect bit size snack. Just for fun serve them on a platter with a bowl of BLOOD (Katchup) 

Mini Hot Dogs or 1 package of Franks cut into 4ths

1 package crescent dinner rolls 8 rolls

1 small package of Almond Slivers

Hide the Hot dogs into the crescent rolls (kind of like a pig in a blanket) press a fork on the top to create the illusion of finger wrinkles. Take 2 almond slivers and poke them into the end as if creating the look of the nail of a finger.  Bake in the over 375 and Bake for 12 minutes.

 

Tombstone Cookies

These ghoulish goodies make great party tray decorations. For a fun presentation, stick them in a “graveyard” of chocolate frosting or pudding and invite the kids to scoop to their hearts’ content.

2 ½ c. all-purpose flour
1 c. powdered sugar
2 sticks unsalted butter, melted and cooled slightly
1 large egg, beaten
1 ½ tsp. pure vanilla extract

Mix flour and sugar together well. Add remaining ingredients and combine well. Divide dough into two sections and wrap well in plastic wrap or put in zipper-lock plastic bag. Refrigerate at least two hours or overnight.

Put the kids to work making cookie cutters out of cardboard, or find the cutters at your local party store.

When the dough is chilled, roll each section to about 1/8-inch thickness and let the kids go to work with their cookie cutters. Older kids can even use plastic knives or pastry cutters to cut their shapes from the dough. If desired, use cookie stamps to put things like “RIP” on the tombstones. (You can make a cookie stamp out of a potato. Just cut in the desired stamp design.)

Bake on parchment-lined cookie sheets at 350° F for 10-12 minutes. Cool on racks.

Worms And Dirt Cupcakes

This one is great fun for even the youngest kids. You can even make the decoration one of the party events!

Bake your favorite chocolate cupcakes, either homemade or from a boxed mix.

Frost them with chocolate frosting, then top with a generous sprinkle of crushed chocolate cookies (Oreos work really well).

Cut the Gummi worms in half, and stick them into the tops of the cupcakes so they look like they’re crawling out or burrowing in.

The kids can do as much of the decorating as their age and patience will allow, from the frosting through the worms.

The theory is that grapefruit helps to lower insulin levels, which keeps you from being hungry all the time! I’m not suggesting a Grapefruit diet but those Ruby Reds are MIGHTY delicious and Perfect for a Sweet tooth Snack Attack! GO GO GREEN TEA - Poppy had Spinach – This Hungry Girl has Green tea.  That’s right you here about it EVERYWHERE as the “super food”. Weather its articles about how it has reduced rates of heart disease and cancer or helps with hair loss you can’t help but wonder what the rage is about.  Green tea has been shown to increase metabolism, which is key in our battle with weight loss. I have to admit it isn’t at the top of my must have list but the Hungry Girl secret is Green Tea Crème Swappuccino! Delicious and only 75 calories.

FOODS – With a KICK - I swear with the pregnancy of my second child I became a Spicy Food Fanatic and who knew it was good for me.  I don’t know why but once I had her I couldn’t get enough of the HOT stuff.  Tabasco Sauce, Jalapeno’s anything to add a KICK to my food and I was on board.  Well come to find out that little kick of spice in your food helps to increase your heart rate and a temporary increase in your metabolism, burning fat a little easier even if just for a moment.  A quick hit with cayenne, red pepper flakes, or whatever hot sauce you fancy should do the trick and get your blood pumping. And these spices are practically calorie-free. OH YEAH!!!  

WATER – Drinking your 8 glasses of water a day is key to your Hungry Girl success. Don’t like the taste of water?  With the variety of great flavored waters or sugar free additives on the market, finding a flavor to flatter your taste buds should be easy.  Still not convinced that drinking water is good for you? Fabulous Meals On A Budget

Now a days who doesn’t need Inexpensive Cooking Tips.  Saving money on those things that you truly need goes hand and hand with an effective household budget.  Eating out at expensive restaurants just doesn’t fit on the list of must do things.  With two kids and a husband that grew up on eating out, one of our biggest struggles is finding ways to make inexpensive eating in, more fun then eating out.  That’s where America’s Most Wanted Recipes came into our kitchen and started making dinner time fun and delicious for the whole family with its inexpensive cooking tips. 

 

To start saving I take an inventory of our family’s favorite restaurants and food items.  This gave me an immediate list of weekly menu items that were sure to be a hit with the family and not a hit on our household budget.   From Applebee’s Baby Back Ribs and KFC Original Recipe Fried Chicken to California Pizza Kitchens BBQ Chicken Pizza the inexpensive cooking items from the America’s Most Wanted Recipes cookbook were the secret we were looking for.
